Locate Plants
Many of the plants that passed our trials are not well-known, and sometimes difficult to find. It is our hope that, with time, more garden centers will stock them. Here are some helpful ideas for finding them:
Explore your local garden centers: Check your latest yellow pages for all the garden centers in your area. Spend a day exploring them. You will be surprised at what you will find. If you are looking for a specific plant and do not see it, ask the staff if they will order it in for you. Almost all the plants in both of our books are available from wholesalers, and garden centers can usually find them for you.
Shop for plants that are currently in season. Garden centers stock plants that are currently blooming. It is difficult to find summer bloomers in the middle of winter, and vise-versa.
Use plant locater services. Betrock has a service called Plant Finder (www.plantfinder.com) that is primarily for the trade. They list plants by botanical name, with the names of nurseries that stock them right below. Almost all of the plants in our books are listed in Plant Finder. If you not in the business, call the listed nurseries and ask them if they sell retail. If they say no, ask them if they know any retailers that stock the plant. They may be supplying several retail garden centers in your area.
Finding plants from internet search engines: You will be surprised at how much information you will find about a specific plant by simply typing its name in a search engine and hitting GO!
